World-Class Orthopedic Oncology

Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center is proud to offer our patients world-class orthopedic oncology, led by Dr. Ron Hugate.

Masses or tumors can develop in the bones, muscles, joints, and other parts of the body, including the pelvis, legs, and neck. Orthopedic oncologists are specialized medical professionals who treat complex bone and soft tissue tumors, providing expert diagnosis and care. While most people initially are concerned that they may have a cancer diagnosis, they are surprised to find out that the vast majority of tumors involving muscles, bones, joints, and even fatty tissue (fat) are not cancerous. Patients are treated with individualized approaches tailored to their specific needs.

Patient Overcomes Bone Cancer with Orthopedic Oncology

What is Orthopedic Oncology?

Orthopedic oncology is a highly specialized branch of medicine dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors, including both soft tissue sarcomas and benign bone tumors. Orthopedic oncologists work closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other specialists to deliver comprehensive cancer care tailored to each patient’s unique needs. This collaborative approach ensures that patients benefit from individualized treatment plans designed to effectively remove tumors while preserving mobility and enhancing quality of life.

According to the National Cancer Institute, orthopedic oncology plays a crucial role in the management of both malignant and benign bone and soft tissue tumors. One of the key advancements in this field is limb sparing surgery, which allows many patients to avoid amputation and maintain function in the affected limb. By combining expertise in surgery, medicine, and rehabilitation, orthopedic oncologists strive to provide the best possible outcomes for patients facing bone and soft tissue cancers, always with a focus on maintaining the highest quality of life.

Diagnosis and Staging

Accurate diagnosis and staging are essential first steps in the effective treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors. Orthopedic oncologists utilize advanced imaging techniques, such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans, to thoroughly evaluate tumors and determine their extent. In many cases, a biopsy is performed to confirm the diagnosis and identify the specific type of tumor.

Once a diagnosis is established, a multidisciplinary team—including orthopedic oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and, when needed, plastic surgery specialists—collaborates to develop a personalized treatment plan. This team approach ensures that every aspect of the patient’s care is considered, from surgical removal of the tumor to potential reconstruction and rehabilitation. The use of innovative reconstruction techniques, including plastic surgery, helps restore both function and appearance, supporting the patient’s overall well-being.

Throughout the process, orthopedic oncologists remain intimately involved in every stage of care, from initial diagnosis to treatment and long-term follow-up. By working closely with other specialists, they ensure that patients receive coordinated, high-quality care that addresses both the medical and personal aspects of living with bone and soft tissue tumors.
